GPU process crashes every time i try and launch a modpack

I am running Ubuntu 21.04 with the FTB app and openjdk 11.0.13 2021-10-19 . the app will launch OK but when i hit launch on any mod-pack it will open a blank window for a fraction of a second then close then it will repeat this again but stay closed this time. i get the following warning in the logs

WARNING:gpu_process_host.cc(1262)] The GPU process has crashed 1 time(s)

I'm having this exact problem on Ubuntu 18.04.6. It is definitely FTB though because I can launch Minecraft any other way just fine.
