So, having upgraded our server to direwolf20 1.8.0 I decided to risk locking my character out / exploding the server.
RoraxPlays had an encounter with them on Forgecraft2 that indicated that recent versions might not be as server crashingly buggy as they were circa direwolf20 1.3.x so I located one, dug it out and pickaxed the glowing runes exposed.

I didn't crash out, and it ativated. Nice. It started with a rather damaged health bar and a randomly changing name. More glowing runes appeared. I used a pickaxe on them. Range based mining tools (Thaumcrafts focus: excavation) could not target them.

Each one mined seemed to damage it more. Its flailings are more annoying than anything as there is rather flaky collision detection associated with the arms and so on. Creative flight is absolutely crucial to being able to target and damage the runes while it is moving around.

And then its body and legs detached - it left a leg behind, wandered off and became untargetable. I fibure some kind of client/server sync issue as I relogged and it thankfully had not despawned, and I could target the remaining glowing runes.
At some point it just stopped moving, harvesting the remaining runes did not do further damage, and now it just stands, motionless, in a field, its body still has one leg attached, the other is some distance away. An arm has just gone missing. There are no further runes to break and nothing I can do can damage it anymore.
