Nice... I hope some people find this useful when trying to find mods they want to try out.

IC2 machine blocks look very nice if you have the right texture pack, so I think that can count as decorative blocks. Also, Redpower adds 4 types of weapons. MPS, and ThaumCraft should be included in transportation (I'm pretty sure you can add flying with MPS, and ThaumCraft adds the Boots of the Traveler. Probably the most useful thing it adds if you are an adventurer. Electric engines don't make EU, they use it to make MJ. ThaumCraft adds the Infernal Furnace, which should be included in Smelting. Overall, this could be very helpful to modpack noobs, or people that haven't touched certain mods.

@SatanicSanta, I have added in all of your suggestions - Flying is listed under Transportation (Player, Flying).

If anyone has ideas for more or different categories, I would love that too.

Perhaps to expand it a little more, put in mods that aren't in the modpacks by default?
For example, tinkers construct comes to mind

@Adonis0, my idea if this develops into a truly useful resource is to move it to an even more useful medium, such as a wiki, spreadsheet, or webpage. If I do this, then I would like to set up to be able to filter the list according to specific modpacks. Even if I do this, I may eventually add in a section for other mods, not currently in the FTB packs, but for now I will focus on the mods that are in the packs. It's seems likely to me, however, that Tinker's Construct/Natura may make it's way into the packs at some point. Here's hoping.

@Bigglesworth, as I mentioned a bit higher up, I plan on moving this to other media, possibly a google spreadsheet, if it develops into a useful resource. I wanted to just throw the idea out there first so I could get feedback from folks. Also, what exactly do you have in mind when you say 'color code to types'? Do you mean give each mod a color?

Maybe a graphic, with helpful yet brief descriptions of what they are, what they do, and how they are made.

@Mikota, yes Portal Gun love it

@SatanicSanta -- graphics, descriptions etc are part of my ideas for moving this guide to other media if it makes sense to do so. Of course the ultimate "other media" would be for me to make a mod that provides this information in game, which is a thought I've been toying with ...

Maybe this type of system could be implemented on the FTB wiki? Have a page that asks you what you are interested in, say Lighting, then it will take you to a page of a list of mods that add lighting, with then a link to each wiki entry about that item.

You can add Gregtech to music (sonictron - both handheld MP3 player thing and the block version to compose), and also add it to mining, storage (fluids), and storage (items). He has a quantum chest for items, and a quantum liquids chest or something (quantum tank I think) for liquids.

Greg also had redstone logic in his mod! With a variable-strength output, strength displays, and logic blocks.

Sent from boobs (because why not?)

You can also add xeno's reliquary to potions. Not quite vanilla potions, but they're still potions.

You can add thaumcraft to base defense (golems).

You can add buildcraft to water generation (pump), aswell as Xycraft tanks (having a block of water next to a xycraft tank generates water in the tank. you can also do it with xychorium water)

You can add magic mirrors to Thaumcraft transport of items.

You can add ender tanks to transport (fluids).

Redpower 2 adds Vorpal and Disjunction as enchants. Vorpal has a chance to insta-kill somebody by taking off their head, disjunction deals extra damage to endermen.

You can add Thermal Expansion (portable tanks, liquiducts) and Enderchests (endertanks) to the lighting section. If you fill them with a liquid that emits light, like lava, then they emit light.

You can add Thaumcraft to armor (robes, although they aren't very good at protecting you).

You can also add an Explosives section. All I can think of to add there is Industrialcraft, Vanilla, and Gregtech (his machines make some pretty big explosions when you give them too much voltage).

You can add Redpower 2 to water generation (deployers with buckets) aswell as vanilla (dispensers with buckets).

You can add Computercraft to music (iron note blocks).

You can add Computercraft (turtles) to farming (trees), base defence, water generation, transport (items), transport (fluids), crafting, and building.

I shall look for more when I get back.

Thaumcraft has plate armor too, which has a quite high enchantability, but not sure about its effectiveness

Base Defence
Thuamcraft (warded blocks) and SecretRooms (camo blocks, ghost blocks, camo doors, camo levers)

Decorative:
Forestry (various types of wood), Thaumcraft (Amber, Warded) to Decorative. RedPower also adds both marble and basalt to decorative. Railcraft adds iron fences. Mystcraft adds crystal blocks. Buildcraft Facades? (Definately makes pipes more decorative...)

Tools:
Applied Energistics (Quartz)

Weapons:
Applied Energistics (Quartz sword)

Ore Doubling:
Applied Energistics (Quartz Grindstone)

Smelting:
RedPower (Alloy Furnace)

I'll no doubt think of more later, but thats it for now.
