After playing for a while I get the following message:
lowmem.png

And according to task manager, java uses about ~6GB ram when I've only allocated 2GB for minecraft in the launcher. I've tried setting it to 4GB but the problem persist.

Java 7u17 64bit
Windows 8 Pro
i7 2600K @ Standard clock
8GB DDR3 @ 1333mhz

How can I fix this? My friends who plays on the same server doesn't have this problem.

Are you running the server and client, or just the client? Have you tried closing other programs so that Java is the only thing using it, then giving it more memory?

For me, I allocated 6GB in the launcher but I find it only uses about 2-3 in practice, although I have 16GB so I can afford to give it more. The server needs about 8 by itself if I'm running that.

It could also be an issue with your version of Java. Anyone here have that Win 8 / that java version and able to run MC? I have 1.7.0_02-ea-b07, on Win 7 x64.

edit: Also, have you tried Optifine? It may end up causing more issues than it solves but if you use it to enhance performance it could lower MC resource usage. I am using it myself (although FTB runs fine without it).

edit: not sure then, sorry. Perhaps it's a graphics driver issue or a software conflict, if there's no other difference between your two machines?

I'm not running the server on my computer.
My friend is also using windows 8 with the same java version. We have about the exact same computer. Except I'm using a GTX 680 and he's using a GTX 670.
Closing programs? Shouldn't have to since java shouldn't use 6GB of my ram.

Its a problem with java, not ftb or minecraft. Any time java is allowed to run for extended periods of time, it eats more and more memory. Programs can be written to minimize this, but its a problem that has existed for as long as I can remember.
