FTB SkyFactory 3 - initializing mods phase 2 crash

  • Tech Support section is for getting help with FTB related problems. If there's a repeatable issue that can be labeled as a bug, then please use the issue tracker for the pack or the app at GitHub issue trackers - If there's no repository for a pack that means that the pack is old and/or will not be updated. Bugs for older packs will not be fixed, unless they are critical.

Details of the issue PC: i5 4670K,, R9 280, 8GB RAM (2x4GB), 250GB SSD, 1TB HDD

I installed the Twitch launcher yesterday, with fresh install of Minecraft & FTB SkyFactory 3, nothing else.

Loaded up the world, played for a while and then took a break. When I came back later, the game was crashing on startup (initializing mods phase 2 - 4/7). I saw in a Reddit thread that increasing RAM allocation could help, so did that via Twitch launcher (Settings > Minecraft > Max Memory Allocation), upped it from 3072MB to 5120MB.

That fixed it, I played for a few more hours and then shutdown for the night.
I tried to play it again today, but it was back to crashing (same point during load, 4/7) and increasing allocation to 6144MB had no effect.

I tried Jar launcher method (also updated 32 & 64bit to 1.8.0.144). When set to "Always latest version" or 64bit, I hit Play and nothing happens. Set to 32bit, and it loads an old Minecraft launcher with outdated message popup (1.6.79, guessing from when I last played Minecraft, old install still there in D drive I think).

I've run out of ideas so any help would be appreciated. With only 8GB RAM installed, its not as if I can keep feeding it more.

Looking at a few recording I took of the crash, it seems to crash at "Initialzation - RFTools 163/193".

EDIT:
Or at least, that's the last thing to display before the crash.

Somehow it made it past 4/7 and the game has loaded up...
Not sure what is going on, but it's working again, for now at least.

Played a few more hours, built a bit more in the world. Had enough for today, so saved and then restarted PC. Sure enough, after the reboot it is back to crashing at around the "Initialzation - RFTools 163/193" stage.

If I tried reinstalling the Twitch launcher and Minecraft + SkyFactory, what are the folders I should be backing up so I don't lose my progress?
C:\...\Minecraft\Install\saves\July '17
C:\...\Minecraft\Instances\FTB Presents SkyFactory 3\backups
C:\...\Minecraft\Instances\FTB Presents SkyFactory 3\saves\[world-name]

Am I missing anything? I'd probably just backup the entire Minecraft folder, but I have a feeling overwriting all of the files over a fresh install would just carry over the problem.

After it loading and not loading, seemingly at random I noticed that one of the times it had loaded, I didn't have MSI Afterburner running. I usually run it to monitor temps, framerate, frametime etc. when testing game settings.
So did a restart of the PC, loaded the game without Afterburner. Loaded fine. Then enabled Afterburner and then launched the game, and what do you know it crashes. Disable Afterburner, and the game loads no problem.

Repeated the test with Afterburner on, then back off again and same results. So there's something in Afterburner (or the settings I've enabled that it doesn't like).
So if you have a crashing issue similar to mine and use MSI Afterburner, try disabling Afterburner.

Been looking for a solution for days now. Can confirm this works! RFTools somehow conflicts with MSI Afterburner!
