If I were to make a private server for me and 2-3 friends that was alternating FTB packs, about how much ram would I want?

For system memory I would suggest a ubuntu box with 8 GB should be sufficient. If you go with a windows box then you would probably want 12 to 16GB. As far as allocating memory to run the server I typically give the server about the same I give the client. So for most of the 1.10.2 packs I use about 5GB.
