This may seem like a silly question, but since I've not used mods before, I don't know what I'm doing.
I initially got FTB and played single player.
Then my sister got FTB, and opening to LAN isn't usefull for persistant play together. (incase I need to relog)
So, I moved my map to the FTB Server... which worked fine.

Well, now with the updating of FTB... how do I switch the server to a particular mod pack?
I see the Mindcrack one available and a note saying the direwolf20 will soon be available as well.

How do I set my server to one of those in particular?

Be prepaired for me to ask for details, if I need them.

In ftb launcher select filter then server and download files, you should move worlds to new server files dir, but you have to restart the map, because world gen. Have been changed :)

Didn't know the launcher could be used for server as well... I had just downloaded the jar directly... thank you AnDroid. ^_^

is there anyway to keep a current world when changing from (for example) BetaA to Mindcrack?
You could do that... but there are two issues.
1) any world generation caused by the mods in MindCrack may not appear, or at least require a fair amount of travel.
2) anything existing from other mods will at best just vanish... and at worst make the map unplayable.
--ie: mystcraft stuff will vanish or break the world.

As a note, the difficulty is increased in the Mindcrack pack.
Mystcraft is gone, recipes are more expensive and there seem to be more items in NEI that don't have recipes... and I can't find good wikis for some of the stuff.

Is there a command-line solution for this? I mean I can't use the launcher GUI on my own server. I start the server via the command line. Maybe there are some parameters I could use?

Okay, let me clarify.

All you have to do, to try, this is set up the new server (MindCrack) and set the server properties to use the old map (BetaA).
However, keep in mind that some mods will be gone, and others added.

For example, Mystcraft is gone... any book stands, lecterns and crystal blocks
They could just fully disappear... or leave a form of remnant that the game knows something was there and cause a glitch.
Of course, if a mod in the new pack uses the same block id, it would just switch out the blocks.

I checked the lists:
BetaA has 26 mods.
MindCrack has 33 mods.

From what I can tell, 7 mods are from BetaA are not in MindCrack, some of which alter the way the game works... but may not impact the generated world.
If anything from those mods is implemented, they should* disappear... but may cause bugs.
IC is switched to IC2, which should* transfer fine.
Obsidian Pressure Plate has be swapped to ObsidiPlates... might* work fine.

And then 14 new mods are added... a few change world generation... big time.
This means on an old map, there will be some ores that will vanish or bug in currently generated terrain... and many (tons) of ores that won't be in the currently generated lands.

Now, ignoring all the gameplay things... let's look at the background mechanics.
The way the world generates is being changed by some mods in each... and each has a different set of mods doing it.
Let's simplify it.

Vanilla Minecraft 1.4.6 is really just a modded form of Minecraft Beta... which was a modded form of Minecraft Alpha... Indev, etc...
Well, they way world generation works is different in each one.
Just before MindCrack went to Feed the Beast (and lost an arm to it), I loaded up one of my Alpha maps for nastalgia.
What did I find? Well, not my map... or at least, not much of it.
The mountain I had built my first base in during my first time playing Minecraft was sliced clean down the chunk line... one side had a little of my base left...
the other was ocean. I was dropped to swim in the ocean and stare at the wall that had been the base I had built oh so long ago.

When the server maps went to Anvil (I think that was what it was), it attempted to convert the map over but destroyed it completely.
I wasn't able to load up my server until I just wiped it out and started with a fresh server and map.

So, this is a little of what you risk by using a BetaA FTB map with a MindCrack FTB server.
But, who knows... maybe it will work... I suggest backing up with map before trying.
^_^
Great... I think I might go try myself later... *rumages through files*
