I have just recently discovered the greatness of FTB, and decided to give it a go and downloaded (on suggestion from a fellow player) direwolf20 modpack, and it just seems like so much I can barely wrap my head around it! What would you guys suggest as a good starting modpack for a new FTB player? I like the ideas of the quarries and such if that helps any. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Direwolf20, and watch his letsplay series. He uses the modpack and explains everything he does like a tutorial. 
Adding on to what ThatOneSlowking said, watch it from the beginning of this season. There are some interesting mods he uses all the time but doesn't cover as he already did. He's making something interesting with MFFS. Power consuming but completely automatic.
As they have posted above Direwolf20's Lets plays and Server plays are highly informative, But if you really want to focus on one aspect in the pack at a time (my preferred way of learning) make sure to watch Direwolf20's Mod Spotlights. They are without question the most informative videos and I highly recommend them.

There's a fair amount of information on the FTB Wiki, and I'm currently working (probably way too much) on getting as much info for the 1.6.4 mods as possible.
