Just wanted to jump in here to say that I have had this issue too, and have learned that the lily does work if using certain soils. I'm using Oceanblock v1.9.0. I was unable to use them with most soils I tried, but the blaze mesh from Botania worked for it. I cannot find any other soils that work, though that doesn't mean they don't exist.
