I've set up a system using Ender Storage ender chests and an ender pouch. The chest has an Extra Utilities transfer node on it to extract items and place them into a wall of better barrels, one barrel per item obviously. My system doesn't like that. It wants to place items into 3 or 4 different barrels. The transfer node has a depth first upgrade so it will check up and down before it moves to the next column of barrels, and it has 30 speed upgrades. I don't know if the order the upgrades are in the node matters any, but the depth upgrade is in the first slot, the speed upgrades are in the second slot. I've tried to tinker with it as much as I know how. I've tested it without the depth upgrade, without the speed upgrades, I've changed their positions with each other in the node, I've moved the chest to connect the node with different pipes on the wall of barrels, I've locked several empty barrels ahead of the one I want the items to land in and they just go into the ones ahead of those that are open. I'm completely stumped. I have no clue how to fix this. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Don't leave the barrels empty. Put something as place holder into the barrels currently not being used. The other option to rearrange the barrels into a long chain rather than branch to several lines of barrels. This ensures that the closest barrel is one the one used.

I don't have quite enough yet to start filling in each barrel with individual resources, I have 64 of them set up. But I'm sure it could be done.

You don't have to fill it. Just put one item that you won't be sorting into each unused barrel like dark oak. That way since the barrel contains an item the pipes won't put anything in there. Put an overflow chest at the end through some type of dense pipe (so it looks like the farthest inventory. Anything that winds up in that chest pull out and manually place it into a barrel so that future sorting of that item is correct.
