Does pick axe need to be unused to build a quarry?

Hi y'all. Trying to build a quarry. I have all of the gears, the red stone and the pickaxe. When I add them to the crafting table, nothing is created. I'm wondering if a) the diamond pick axe needs to be unused or b) if it requires a special type of crafting table.

Yeah, using the pickaxe changes the NBT/Metadata tags. The recipes look for unused tools, so once they've been used, even if repaired, the extra tags no longer make them valid.

Yes, I remember back in the old days asking if the diamond pick in the BC quarry could be set to allow a little damage. Always seemed like a kick in the teeth to need the 8 diamonds for the gears and ANOTHER 3 for ANOTHER pick .

Alas, all the recipes that need s tool want a clean, unused one.
