Do I need thermal expansion for RF to exist?

I have a few mods that use RF in them, so I was hoping to avoid having to actually install Thermal expansion because I'm just not interested in the nitty gritty of all that. I just want to use the few basic things I have now.

But, I'm using lava generators from extra utilities, and they have an RF buffer that isn't filling up. Is this why? When I go and make myself dark steel armor, am I not going to be able to empower them? Is there some super basic core mod I can just add without having to find a spot of yellorium and all that nonsense? Or am I just gonna have to suck it up and do it all?

There's an RF API that is used by many mods to provide the necessary functionality. Your pack probably wouldn't have loaded properly if it were missing.

edit: Your pack probably has either cofhlib, or (less likely) RedstoneFlux-API. Both of which provide the necessary functionality.

Oh, yes, it has cofhlib. I recognize it because I read the first 4 letters in a very dirty way, lol. (I dunno the rules here so I'll leave it at that!)

So, when why are my lava generators not storing RF?

No idea. Provide some screenshots of your block arrangement and the LavaGen UI?

I'm at work, but I can describe it. It's very simple. I have two rows of 6 lava generators, with gold fluid pipes in between, connected to an ender tank full of lava (with an emerald fluid pipe powered by a redstone engine). It's powering my quarry with no problems. But the UI for the lava generators shows the RF gauge, it's just stuck at 0.

Though... it's possible they were just using all their energy running the quarry, so maybe I'm the dummy.

Oh I didn't realize you'd confirmed the power itself was working.

I think you already found the solution: the quarry is consuming all the power.
