Basically the problem is that I am hosting a server for the Direwolf20 modpack recently released and when my friend is joining it is causing his game to crash and close. I ran the server with a world with biomes o plenty enabled 'Not sure if that has anything to do with it' none of my other friends have this problem but him so what should I advise him to do?

Try asking him to run it in SSP, because portal gun and gravity gun mod download files from external sites when joining a server/loading an SSP world. And then ask him to connect to your server.
P.S. I had the same problem and this is how I resolved it

Thankyou. I asked him to do it earlier he said he had tried that but it didnt work, Ill get him to try again. Thankyou. Also are you having issues with certain things causing crashes when attempting to interact with them?

E.g. I crash when opening the research table on thaumcraft?
