Problem Direwolf Pack Linux RAM requirement and "OutOfMemoryError" on Start

Hi guys,
Earlier today I tried to set up a Direwolf 20 Server (latest version (1.0.18), untouched) on my VPS running Ubuntu Server 12.04. I had 1GB of RAM allocated to it however I get the following error when starting it (it does not appear in the log, only in the console, however is necessary I can provide a screen log)

java.lang.OutOfMemoryError thrown from the UncaughtExceptionHandler in thread "Thread-16"

(I'm using Oracle/Sun Java fyi)
I tried starting the server on my desktop PC, also with 1GB of RAM, however it started perfectly fine.
So firstly, is 1GB enough on Linux, despite it being fine for Windows, and I have seen server rental companies offer less than that, and they likely use Linux.
Secondly, is the error I'm having necessarily due to 1GB not being enough memory, or is it something unrelated?

It'd be great if anyone can help.

Well the latest versions has a lot of mods, so either windows or Linux server will eventually run out of ram if enough people are online. On the windows server it probably didn't run out of ram because less things were going on or some other minor detail as with the latest versions of the packs 1GB is just not enough anymore I suggest 2-5 or 4-8 to be safe.

Hmmm, ok. I tried 1.5GB but that also is not enough. The confusing thing for me is that Creeperhost (which uses Linux) offers servers less than 1GB, so I presumed it was something else that caused the out of memory issue. Unfortunately I do not have the resources to spare more than 1.5GB for a game server if it is a case of that not being enough to even start it. :/
