Crafted spawner question

Hi, my question about a crafted spawner is...how many block high should I place it to make mobs ( cow ) fall and get damaged and be barely alive so I can finish them with my sword ( 1 hit ) to get the XP ?

mobs take damage at the same rate as players = number of blocks fallen minus 3

Cows have 10hp, so a drop of 13 would kill them, a drop of 12 however, would leave them with 1 hp.

If you find that there are still mobs dieing after a fall you can add a half slab on their landing area. (or fences) Also with cows if you have them fall thru lava then you can get cooked meat instead of raw.
