When I plant cotton seeds adjacent to each other, they are instantly uprooted! Why does this happen? I place them one block apart from each other to keep them from uprooting themselves but even then, every few seconds or minutes, randomly one of the plants will be uprooted on its own, dropping the seed back on the ground. Why? And how do I prevent this entirely?

Light level? sounds like the light level is too low so when you plant the second a block update happens and it uproots.
I thought it was the light level as well, but I placed torches nearby and the problem persisted!
I don't know about hydrated, but they tend to randomly explode on bare ground. I found it happening with 'wild' ones so it's not a freak occurrence. Never happened when planted on farmed ground.
