cant update to 1.5 and up

I am confused when i see servers that are ftb but 1.6.2 or 1.5.2 and have people on how do i update my actual minecraft not the launcher? like update it all to 1.6.2 or something? please help!

All the packs are related to their respective versions of minecraft and as such will be running the correct one. If you are trying to say update from a pack that is for 1.4.7 to 1.5.2 or even 1.6 then it will not work.
