Can't make Iron gears in FTB revelations?

Trying to create some buildcraft stuff for the nostalgia factor, for some reason when I follow the recipe for iron gears nothing happens??? I can create wooden gears and then stone gears but the iron gear recipe does not work. Is this a known bug, or am I being silly??
