Can't make craft items

Hello and thanks for FTB. My son loves it! However, we can't figure out how to make an item. No matter what recipe we place in the craft window it won't combine.
We are new to Minecraft so this might be more of a newb question than something wtih FTB? Although, we have no problem combing in other Minecraft versions.
Any idea what might be the problem?

Using Direwolf20 pack v4, single player.

What item are you trying to create? Or just anything? If the latter then you might want to check out the getting started guides on the wiki http://wiki.feed-the-beast.com/index.php?title=Getting_Started_(Main) and then check out the various mods.

Are you certain you are using the correct recipe shape? What items are not craft-able(mod items, vanilla, all items, etc.)? To craft something I recommend you first create a crafting table:
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting_table

Next fill in the recipe as shown in nei(not enough items).
Now take out what you are trying to craft from the right side of the crafting table(the output).

It will teach you all of the basics you need to know. Use the search on the top right of the page, and type in what you want to know about.
