Breeder giving off radiation normal?

I'm using the following design as a breeder:

Now after having popped in the first isotopes, about 20 minutes in the reactor has flames on the chamber and its hurting me with radiation. Is this normal with breeders and nothing to worry about or am I about to go down in flames?

Yes. Note the Burn/Evaporate/Hurt/Melt temperatures in the top right.

Look in the top right of the applet:
You're going near 21k heat, which is above the "hurt"-level of 19.6k. So when you're close to it, you'll get hurt (and wooden stuff will burn up and water will evaporate).
Possible solutions with keeping the single-chamber desing of yours:
only with GregTech (MindCrack Pack)
Usable with DW20 Pack
