I have heard several people claim that the Mindcrack and Direwolf20 packs will be compatible with the Ultimate pack once it is released, but I don't know when or where this was confirmed. Could someone give me a link to any such confirmation? Or if it was in a stream, try to remember what exactly was said? I've been holding off on FTB for a few weeks now, hoping for the Ultimate pack to come out, but at this point I would really like to just start with the Mindcrack pack, assuming I can transfer the world once I finally get Ultimate.

No one can answer that question with certainty until Ultimate is released. Assuming it's released for 1.4.6 (or 1.4.7) you shouldn't have a problem. However, if it's delayed long enough to be pushed to a release past that, it will likely be more complicated. That said, you can probably import your save game into Ultimate regardless, you just may have to do some tinkering in the configs.

It is very simple, all the packs use the same configs (at least if it comes to blockIDs).

So if the Mod in the DW-Pack uses a certain range of BlockIDs it uses the same range in ultimate or mindcrack or whichever pack.

The FTB-Team propably created a large map of all the IDs and arranged the mods according to this map. Since they will not make multiple ID-maps for several packs it is a lot easier for them to pull all the IDs from the same map and it is easier for us, since we can easily change the modsetup between the packs. The only problem might be that some of the mods have a lot of new items and they need to rearrange some stuff, which hopefully is rather rare, but it could happen and is not exclusive to the ultimate-pack.

The easiest way to confirm is just check the IDs in the Magic, DW and Mindcrack-Packs. You could, if you really want conformation, dig through slows streams, since I asked him this question before, since it makes merging the packs very easy and well he said that it is easier for them to make all the configs use the same ID.

The only exception is Advanced and Compact-Solars, I guess they use the same ID, which actually does make sense.

All packs from FTB team starting with Magic pack use "universal IDs", meaning they set up ID ranges for every single mod they want to use, with free IDs in each, so that they can fit any future block from the updates.
At least, that's the plan.

As said above, there are exceptions in DW20 and Mindcrack, as they both asked for some "custom" mods, but I do believe they set them up so that they wouldn't interfere with the ultimate pack in any way.
