Shouldn't this really be in the Community Showcase subforum?
Is he really showcasing, or begging?

If you REALLY want to learn how to build stuff on your own, here's what I did when I still played vanilla. Go to planetminecraft or some other Site that people show off their builds. Usually the better builds will have a world save and/or an mcedit schematic. Download the save file and walk around in those builds that you like. It allows you to see how blocks can be used creatively. Standing "inside" a build is a LOT better than just pictures.

I even went so far as to Mcedit a few builds into my own worlds and change stuff around and try new materials.

After that you can go for it yourself. I still will look at other people's stuff for inspiration. I often like a particular design quirk and use that from someone else. It's not unheard of to mix and match some things and call it your own. ;)

Throw in looking at real world architecture for more inspiration. Things like flying butresses from Notre Dame, or Neuschawnstein. I often copy someones idea or several someones ideas to start and by the time I am done, it has entirely morphed to my own thing.

The community showcase part of this forum contains many threads of people showing off stuff, including their bases.

Inspiration for bases can come from there. I would suggest building a base of your own from scratch. As you continue to build things you will notice any design flaws; things you wish you thought of beforehand. I still make the mistake of having doors which center blocks are not directly across from each other. It bothers me a lot, so I have a bit of rebuilding to do.

Things like where to locate your power sources and how to organize all the different wiring (conduits, conductive piping, BC pipes, EU wires, ME cables, rednet/redstone/etc.). Those things will also come to mind as you find out that its not as easy/convenient as you thought and wish you had put this here and that there.

As you continue to develop those "instincts", you have achieved a skill called design. It's basically planning.
