In the Direwolf20 pack, I'll been building my house near a RP volcano. It's one of those volcanoes where the basalt is just everywhere. I'd like to be able to clean it up a little bit and just keep the basalt next to the actual volcano. Is there a way to automatically do this?

Filler, turtles, quarry...

There are quite a few ways to empty out en area.

If all fails, you still have mining lasers in either long range or horizontal modes too.

The problem is, the basalt I want to clear out is really flat and spread out, with holes where there's grass. Is there a way to selectively get rid of the basalt?

As others said, the filler. Mark out the basalt you want to get rid of with markers, and use the flatten setting.

I have fallen in love with the filler while building my base just below the sea floor, I wish I had known about it earlier, it makes terraforming a base sooo much easier. For that purpose (as long as you want flat grassland left) you can set it to clear the area first, and then change the program to either flatten or fill to place the dirt/grass back down.

Note that the filler does not collect what it clears, so you will probably want a good stock of dirt to refill with before you do it.

you could write a turtle code to fly over the area, and if the block below them is basalt have him mine it. that woudl work if its a wide flat area and the code would be fairly simple (cook up a piece of smooth cobalt from cobalt cobble to use for comparison)
