I'm trying to create an automatic cactus farm > previously I have used pistons and frames, but as redpower frames are no longer available, I'm not quite sure how to do this... I have a reasonably good setup of power and resources, so expensive builds are OK. Help much appreciated :)
 
ME Transition Planes will pull the cactus when it grows into it. Or you can always go standard vMC on this and just put a block next to where the cactus will grow. Grows into it, pops off into a water stream, gets collected by a hopper.
 
If expensive is ok then transition planes are the way to go, along with 1-2 lamp of growth.

Running for ~2 days (actually less) and got ~58k cactus. Also work very well with sugar cane.

The harvester should be more than capable to handle the cactus farm without much hassle. You do not even need a planter.
