I've recently gotten back into playing minecraft after several years, and returning to a new release
of a brand shiny new Direwolf20 pack was wonderful.
That said, since I am a linux user, I have had to tinker with the settings to get it to run
correctly, and while I don't mind doing a bit of tinkering, there is a particular issue that I have
to tinker with each time to get it to work. So, if you are trying to run DW20 (or any other pack)
off the FTBA on Ubuntu linux, here's my workaround. My feature request will follow.
Most of the software world is up to java 11. That being said, the java version that Minecraft uses
(at least on Ubuntu) is java 8. So, for those of us who use linux, we have this weird situation
where we have to install two different versions of java. The problem that I've been having is that
the FTBA sees the java 11 version and sends that to the minecraft launcher as the configuration to
start the modpack with. I have searched all over the FTBA settings itself, and while it sees java
11 in the individual modpack settings (at least for DW20) tab, it is not aware of the java 8 that is
installed parallel to 11.
So, to work around this every time, what I've been doing is going into the minecraft launcher when
it opens, clicking on the Installations tab, going to the '...' settings for the pack, to More
Options, then browse to my java executable.
(/usr/lib/jvm/java-8-<versionstuff>/bin/java)
Each time I play.
That should get you going - though be aware that (I'm not running a gaming rig, just an old desktop)
the newer packs take a good bit of memory. I've had some severe lag issues with the DW20 pack
(especially if I log out of the game and leave it running in the background on the login screen
after a while/overnight) and I had to bump the memory allocation up to 10G, and strip video settings
down to the bare minimum. This is likely due to not having an actual graphics card other than the
onboard, so YMMV.
Now to the feature request:
It would be awesome if there was a way to either browse to the correct java installation for the
pack, or enter the value in by hand for its installation location and have it saved so it doesn't
have to be re-entered each time. There is currently only a dropdown in the FTBA modpack settings
tab, and it only (on my machine at least) displays Java 11.
Otherwise, thanks to all the hardwork and dedication that the FTB team has put into the pack, and
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all.
