What does this pack add to the game?

"Alternative Minecraft" is centered around the "Better With Mods" mod, which is a rewritten version of the old mod "Better Than Wolves" for MC 1.10.2.

It tries to fix problems I have with the vanilla game, like the annoying food system, auto health regeneration, redstone being a great mechanic but being useless in survival, diamond armor in 2 hours, lack of a real endgame, useless minecarts, at least 1.10 fixed the boring, spammy combat of the previous versions.

Design philosophy:

A good modpack doesn't need to contain many mods, limitation creates creativity. Better with Mods provides almost everything that is needed for automation, some mod that lets you create a magical one block treefarm is unnecessary. A little bit of grinding can profit automation. Players should be rewarded for thinking and taking risks, not for pure luck or playtime. A linear progression shouldn't limit the game but guide the player. Most of the game design of this pack was done by Flowerchild, I only made it less "hardcore".

Features:

New hunger and health mechanics:

Hunger isn't a annoying system, where you have to eat something every few seconds anymore, it depletes much slower, but health regeneration takes a lot of hunger and happens very slowly. Furthermore detrimental effects are added when having low health or hunger like losing the ability to jump. When the player eats more than necessary fat is generated which acts as a hunger buffer but too much fat can lead to negative effects. These changes make hunger less annoying and health more valuable, mobs more dangerous, like in older versions before the hunger system and auto regeneration. (More info on this can be found here)

Seasons and a temperature system:

A new system has been introduced, temperature. Your body temperature now adjusts to the outside temperature. Settling in a desert or a cold tundra becomes harder and going to the nether takes a lot of preparation. Seasons change the appearance and temperature of the environment, in winter crops may die if not heated properly. Combined they add a ton of immersion and while not being overly annoying and adding new challenges to the game. (More info can be found here)

Harder ores:

Iron or gold ore just smelts into nuggets rather than ingots, making them more valuable. But don't worry, you can double your products by smelting the ores in a kiln! But don't worry you have to grind too much for your tools, you can later smelt the damaged tools to get the ingots back, making unenchanted tools effectively lasting forever.

Darker nights and realistic torches:

Torches need to be ignited to work and they burn out after some time. Nights are also very dark, you wont be able to see without some light sources. Later players may use glowstone torches which do not go off. In addition, a torch in your hand or offhand will emit light. These changes make the darkness to be a real thread and exploring at night or in dark places really dangerous.

New automation options:

Block placers, filtered hoppers, detectors, lenses and a bud block allow for unlimited options! And you will need these options, because there a new things to be automated, like the kiln or the crucible.

A mechanical system:

Do you like windmills and watermills? You can now create and use them to power mills, saws, pumps and more devices!
