i am sorry but there are no mods that change the GUI like this, i think you have something installed in your minecraft that cause that, i suggest you to clean the .minecraft folder

make a backup folder before updare! EVER! by the way, i'm pretty sure about that if you update a pack your savegames wont be deleted, maybe something wrong in your folder, or maybe you just deleted them for error...

maybe is a download problem, maybe your router/antivirus does not allow connections that your launcher requests, try to disable all firewalls, clean the ftb folder and re-download the launcher
