I have built a few bases over the past year from starting in the middle of a lake to bedrock. Currently the base I am working on is a single floor carve out of in a mountain which keeps the original terrain around it but everything unseen has pipes and wires going through it :D.

Have you updated your video drivers recently?

I had issues with fps when using both 32 and 64 bit java, I doubt this is the cause but its something to look at. The problem is your system may or may not be defaulting to use 32 bit java instead of 64 bit as 64 bit is needed for large render distance. Currently I only have 64 bit java installed.

if you want fast extraction try a thermal expansion energy cube you can adjust to what speed you want it to take stuff out it works like a charm you can charge it else where and just place it and turn it on and off when needed with a lever too.
