Yep - Dire noted that Chests were not granting Vacuous when he was dumping them into a cauldron in his LP. I saw that this was still an issue a few days ago. Good to know it also happens for furnaces.
In the meantime just use wooden bowls. Still get 1 Vacuous per item, and they're cheaper to craft
