    Maybe ur post is very old, but a Hammer (from Tinkers Construcst) always breakes a 3x3 Area of Stone-Like-Blocks(Ores, Stone, cobble etc.) . An Excavator does the same with Dirt-Like-Blocks(Sand, Dirt, Gravel etc.).
