Maybe look into Railcraft
Start with the boiler options http://railcraft.wikispaces.com/Steam+Boiler+%28Device%29
and produce your EU with a turbine or 2 http://railcraft.wikispaces.com/Steam+Turbine+%28Device%29
IMO - not cheap at all, and a rewarding project to undertake.

They do produce a massive amount to saplings, and a fair few apples.
Saplings in the fermenter and apples in the squeezer, with the waste mulch from the squeezer into the fermenter seems to be a good set up at the minute.
This should help http://forestry.sengir.net/wiki.new/doku.php?id=farms:structure
first step from your screen shot is to move all the farm blocks into a 3 wide, 3 deep, 4 high column in the gap you have in the centre

They could have been found legit.
They want you to breed them now, but back then they wanted you to find them also.
can you not just place a bucket (or cobble block) in the water slot and leave it there?
Then tube your fertiliser into the bottom and saplings in the top via a hopper.
That way you should still be able to use your filters. I'm using filters and hoppers for mine, without timers and it seems to...
It seems there are a lot of us in the same boat here.
I'll try and keep it short.
I have the usual biogas setup and when I started it I was using BC pipes, then as I progressed I upgraded everything to RP tubes and filters/transposers/sorting machines etc.
This is when I started to notice FPS...
