I'm pretty sure plain paper also has knowledge, saves you having to get leather. Also Natura berries and cotton are nice single aspect items. My favorite is rubber though, it'll get you to golems really quickly once you get through the first tier stuff.

The main issue I have with TiC bows and arrows is that vanilla bows and arrows are so easy to get once you have a skeleton spawner up and running. I can't be bothered to craft something if I have tons of the stuff ready to go without having to do much. Vanilla bows and arrows are just too easy...
