Yeah lol. I find that TE unintentionally messes with TConstruct. Like the obsidian thing, getting moss using the liquid transposer, and getting fire aspect more easily using the Pulverizer's blaze powder recipe.

What I usually do is kill green slimes for a slime pickaxe and break obsidian using that. It saves me the diamond that I would usually have to apply to another pick to allow it to mine obsidian.

Rather than rubies and sapphires you can use certus quartz to make mid-game tools.

I think Elo is still working on it, but she has a demanding job unfortunately. ComputerCraft is an amazing mod and it is practically a complete replacement for RP2 Digital; You can program your own redstone. ComputerCraft also replaces many of the machines like the block breakers and deployers...

That won't always work, you can make Thaumcraft tools in Thaumcraft and TConstruct and steel is in TConstruct and Traincraft.

I think someone above mentioned that Netherrack was as good as Iron and you don't need a smeltery for it.

I think he's talking about a new feature that mDiyo added where you can add Luck to your tools by mining with them rather than putting lapis on them. I'm not really sure though, I just saw a mention of it once before.

Tinker's Construct = TC Traincraft = TRC Thaumcraft 3 = TC3 :)

There is another recipe added by Tinker even without configs. You can take a fully repaired piece of chainmail armor and put it in the smeltery.

KirinDave would also be a very good choice in my opinion. He knows a lot about mods and is very helpful.

Do you know how to program? Do you know Java? If you don't I highly recommend that you learn that before you even think about touching modding at all.
