No, sadly, you can make the Diamond plating with Diamonds or Titanium which, when put back in the crafting to deconstruct it gives what back what ever base item you used to make. So, if you use Diamond it only gives back diamonds. I know this because I tried it my self xD

The fisher isn't the most fastest way, but it is the one that makes less lag. Which is one of the points the OP wanted to make. Melons are still the fastest way by far.
