I think it's a bit harder to find out what his different things were for before the direwolf spotlight, It took me forever to figure out what the glass viewers were for. It wasn't apparent at all since the texture pack I use has connected textures for glass.

There is also Battle Towers. It just adds large towers that you fight your way up to a golem. A lot of time I don't find anything good in the chests until the top one. The default config makes the towers way too common I feel and they spawn in all dimensions.

The location you appear in the nether is kind of tied to where you put the portal in the overworld. So you don't usually know where you will appear.

I don't know what causes it but it sometimes happens to me when I am just moving around. I'll get stuck and just bob up and down like that. What I do go into creative mode with NEI and double tap the space bar to fly up and out of it.
