One time while i was inside my house i heard an explosion (I assume it was a lightning strike), when I went outside I found part of my fence missing and my cows running around on fire.

Actually, you are right I believe direwolf20 did such a thing in one of his previous seasons (seasons 3 or 4) with lapatron crystals if you can set up something with say filters and pneumatic tubes you should be able to use the filters to tell when a crystal (or lappack as the case may be) is...

i don't think there are any other ways apart from from the interdimensional from gregtech and converting to MJ and using tesseract.

And to be fair, with the open source, copyleft nature of EE3, even if the author does discontinue it he has in some way made efforts to ensure that other can take it up.

Last time I checked digging up thaumcraft crystals could release small amounts of flux
