I run into the same problem, but honestly it's easily overcome by not relying on iron ore for iron. Using a minium stone turn: 8 logs > 4 obsidian > 1 iron. Or, make an iron golem farm (lots of places to find a plan for that online). Or, turn junk items into scrap and use that to make UU-matter...

From what I've seen, you can't visually tell they are using it, but they are using it. Try spawning in zombies a little away from the golems.
