You can get to the nether, and the end, without using the 3x3 crafting grid at all. Villages often have obsidian in chests, and you can usually find buckets around as well.

For steel, it's usually a lot cheaper to just go with the RailCraft blast furnace (and a coke oven to make coke coal to fuel the steel making process). The industrial blast furnace has a bunch of other things it can make, which you'll need later on.
