I had the exact same problem and couldn't figure it out. I ended up just giving myself a Lord of Torment spawn egg, the fight works the same except there is no initial explosion.

Check your download location, there seems to have been some issues lately. Make sure it is on 'Automatic." It's in Options->Advanced Options->Download Location.

Ah cool thanks. I was just recording and came across a mother spider or queen spider or something like that, it was unkillable. It had crazy regen, same with tough cave spiders. Is this intentional or mobs still need tweaking? I was using an unenchanted diamond sword, if that's any help.
