More ram would help a little, add another 4GB, the larger FTB packs like about 3.5GB assigned to them. It will still not be smooth though as your system is pretty low spec.

If the mobs are dying from one hit with the dagger then it is working. Are you clicking the altar with a divination sigil to work out how much LP is in the altar? Clicking the air with the sigil shows your personal LP network, not the altars LP.

You probably also need the 64bit JRE, it is available from java.com you just have to look for it, it is not the default download.
