Agreed. I usually remove it as well since my friends have low end computers, and I want them to be able to play with me. That and I don't find it that great. But we aren't big into the exploration thing.
You won't be running FTB very well on a laptop without dishing out 900+ dollars. Consider building a PC. And buying a chrome book for your college work.
I play with it on. I hate any distractions to my building of my massive factory. I am not a hardcore player in anyway. That said, I don't complain when a server I play on has it off. Good servers are hard to find, and I understand other people have different play styles then me.

Delete the mods, config, and scripts folders, then put in the folders from the update. Keep the world folder.
Do not just overwrite the mods folder. This can result in duplicate mods, which means an unhappy Forge.
