How about emptying the smeltery into tanks, and then do exactly what you are doing but with tanks.

It seems your real problem is the walking. You are surrounded by water, you could have made a stack of boats and explored the nearby coasts. Now you have to walk back. If boats are too annoying to use, you could have used the nether to move large distances. Also, what's wrong with mutandis?
