Anything with an inventory is a tile entity. Vinallia chests and furnaces are tile entities. If the heat lamp didn't work with tile entities, then the ones on my fermenters shouldn't be doing anything, but they are. =p I'll try it on the bottom of the composter as suggested for the engines...
