I concur in part and dissent in part. The LV machines are very energy efficient. From an energy efficiency standpoint, a full suite of LV machines and even multiples in some cases are best. But MV, yes, it is not worth it to build a full suite, just what you need. If you care about energy...

I could have sworn Thaumcraft shards didn't require such a beefy pick. I got my first diamonds in Infitech2 with a pick made from thaumcraft shards.... But who knows? Different pack, it was a long time ago.... things could be different.

AFAIK it is just crappy coal. You need to extract it to dust then smelt to bars I think.

I wouldn't go that far. He is only one person. Maybe he needs a lieutenant to maintain a 1.7 branch with minor things like this in it. Kind of like how Linus Torvalds is in charge of the latest main Linux kernel, but there are a few people who maintain a few versions back for a while.

So, I finally upgraded from 2.0.5 to 2.1.1 last night. Holy dark steel nerf, Batman! It was probably too easy before, but this looks bonkers.... My son was right, we should have made a stack of dark steel before we upgraded. ;)

I have made steel in my EBF. I collected oxygen from various processes (limonite, magnetite, etc) using EIO conduits into XU drums. Then I put the drum next to the EBF and use an EIO conduit to input into the input hatch of the EBF. Add iron ingots to the same hatch and you are good to go.
