I built the center, and I used a carpenter's trapdoor from Carpenter's Blocks, which I used an alternate iron block as the cover thanks to Chisel, the trapdoor leads underground to the maintenance room where the mentioned Serenade of the Nether operates when the mana pool isn't full. And thanks!

Sooooo. Turns out Unstable wasn't a good pack to be messing with but I still wanted to mess with 1.7 mods. So, after some finding a new pack and shenanigans, I started a new save or two and finally got something presentable. :D

Hmm...maybe disable the Hats and Hats rack mod? It doesn't impact the game much besides give you silly hats to put on, it may be a source of your lag. It was a kind of problem when I messed with the modpack.

You could always use that MineTweaker to disable the recipe I believe. The only TiC related thing I know of that allows you to make obsidian is Steelwork's ability to pour lava and water into faucets in equal amounts, but it makes liquid obsidian so no idea if you consider that breaking...
