After reading that I think I'm just going to mine in the Nether for diamonds. Even in Hardcore that place is less dangerous than red gas :L I'm also considering just disabling Gascraft, at least until the next patch is published. I'm not sure if that would conflict with anything though.

I don't know if gas spawns need to be lowered, rather the explosion strength of red gas and/or coal blocks should be lowered. I don't know specifically how the explosions are so large though so I could be wrong, it could either be from the red gas alone, or by chain reactions creating much...

Have you considered tuning down red gas a little bit? The explosions they create are a bit ridiculous and they can detonate from completely natural events leading to sudden death by explosions and audible explosions occuring while you're on the surface.

Damascus steel is very good for tools. Bronze + Iron in a smelter, it has a mining level of Ardite. It allows you to bypass Alumite / Obsidian (but I think Alumite is still better in terms of stats). On the subject of Metallurgy, does anyone know the armor values of all those Metallurgy armor sets?

I may have just been lucky with the find and lack of mobs, but I found 5 chests and a cake room in the first level, all without encountering a single mob. With the whole place lit up nothing spawns. All the chests had torches, bread, some had enchanted armor and music discs. I wouldn't be too...

Good to hear :) A lot of the chests I've found contained items which made surviving a lot easier than it should be. Some notable examples are iron armor/tools in village and Witchery chests and lots of assorted items in the Deadly Worlds cave chests.

Well my point still stands - I only explored the first level and got more than enough supplies to completely bypass the intended early game challenge of gathering supplies. The armor was also quite helpful for surviving the first few nights.

In my opinion Roguelike Dungeons doesn't belong in this pack. While it is an excellent mod, the vast amount of loot you can find in them and the dungeons being relatively easy to explore compared to running around at night, just gives you way too much free stuff if you find one in the early game...

Yeah the sudden ear-piercing sound of torches being broken just beneath my feet makes me jump out of my seat! Also, fishing zombie is DEADLY when surrounded by creepers. :(

One other thing I've noticed is that Mattocks don't use 4x their durability when used as a hoe, which is supposed to happen according to Iguana Tweaks. Is this intentional? Also, my mattock just broke completely when tilling grass for seeds. I don't think that's meant to happen either :(
