I made arthana after having killed 100 or so and seen none. Went out hunting next night and killed about 10 creepers with arthana. Got three hearts. RNG will be a factor, but arthana boosts odds in your favor reasonably. Witchery wiki says high fortune on arthana is even better.

Or, I just came up with a hopperhock-based timer for it too. Miss my easy timer, and this takes more room and you have to stay away from it or you will suck up the block making the circuit, but it does make Smeltery load and forget. So long as you avoid dumping in alloyable raw ore, at least...
