Take for example thaumcraft, it took a long time to update, but when it did it was completely rewritten, SMP, a lot of new stuff. Those mods are worth the wait in my opinion.
I would mention IC2 and how we havent gotten anything until now... boats. but IC2 at least ports quickly and doesn't hold everyone back.
