Generally rushing a furnace will be enough. Once I have a furnace and shears (1 pair of shears makes what? conservatively around 15 water bottles) I tend not to have to worry about water as long as I farm trees occasionally. Some things you can try: Using the Water can on trees will speed up...

LOL you know any weapon in TiCon is extremely strong. Most of us use Frying Pans :P (I just made my Iron/Copper one for prep for the city!) By all means if you think the mattock is too strong, you can go to your configs and change it ^^. I do think it's very powerful however.

As far as the Creeper Pit...on the bright side no other mobs spawn now. There are too many creepers in the hole so nothing else seems to be spawning near me xD.

Correct. If you can't get it from a drop though, sieving 1-2gravel should be plenty ^^. (Which takes 3-4 more cobble I guess)

I agree with you; however, you can make a stone saw. Takes 3 stone tool rods, 2 sticks, and 1 flint. Just as a heads-up. ^^
