personally i went from damascus steel, boosted it, and then got shadow steel from shadow iron and lemurite. regular steel works same as damascus steel but mines faster and is more durable.

damascus steel is an alloy made in the smeltery by combining 3 iron and 2 bronze, bronze is made by combining 3 copper with 1 tin. and once you've boosted your iron pickaxe, it should be able to mine copper, iron, and tin. you can see the recipes in the link i posted before. good luck! also...
